The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has created and formalized a division allowing high school student-athletes with physical disabilities to formally compete in the sports of track & field and swimming along with their able-bodied peers and teammates. Students are now eligible to qualify for and compete in the state meet for CIF State Championship medals, school varsity letters, records and other accolades.
In track the “Para” student-athletes compete in the 100M, 200M, and 400M races and the shot put, standing or seated. Parents who have interested students must approach coaches and initiate the administrative process to join the high school sport teams. The parents need to make sure that the students’ disability(s) are documented in permanent school records.
